Cart abandonment is the most expensive 'industry average' in e-commerce. Roughly 7 in 10 carts never convert — and most of those shoppers intended to buy. Checkout optimization is the highest-ROI work in digital retail, because you're not acquiring new visitors; you're keeping the ones you already paid for.
1. Guest checkout, always
Forcing account creation at checkout converts buyers into leavers. Offer guest checkout, capture the email, and invite account creation after the purchase — when the buyer is most satisfied and most willing.
2. Show the whole price early
The most common surprise at checkout is shipping. Shoppers abandon when they feel tricked. Show shipping estimates on the cart page, and surface taxes before the payment screen. Honesty is a conversion tactic.
3–9. The rest of the list
- Cut fields to the minimum for fulfillment and lean on autofill
- Address autocomplete and inline validation errors
- Put trust cues next to the payment button, not in the footer
- Test single-page vs. multi-step checkout with real data
- Offer wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay, local options) people already use
- Handle payment failure gracefully with retry and alternatives
- Instrument every funnel step — the biggest drop-off is rarely where intuition puts it
Every checkout is a negotiation between friction and trust. Your job is to remove friction without removing trust.
